The researchers performed a study published in the European Heart Journal with an aim of assessing the value of blood telomere length and vascular telomere length as biomarkers of systemic/vascular oxidative stress and explored the clinical predictive value of blood telomere length in acute myocardial infarction. It was shown that in a prospective cohort of 290 patients who survived recent acute myocardial infarction, blood telomere length prognosticates cardiovascular outcomes post- acute myocardial infarction, regardless of age, whereas vascular telomere length appears to be a tissue-specific biomarker of vascular oxidative stress.
